MORNING BREATH EXPLAINED

"Bad Breath is due to a bacterial imbalance of the biofilms of the mouth and throat".

Morning Breath is that horrible bad taste or smell that you wake with. You may notice it on yourself or your partner. It is also obvious after any extended period of sleep, it doesn't have to only be in the morning. If you consume alcohol the night before and then go to sleep, you will notice a much increased morning breath problem when you wake. If you snacked during the night and did not clean their mouth afterwards, once again you will notice a worse problem when you wake.

Morning Breath is caused by an accumulation of biofilm on the tongue, teeth, gums and throat that has not been adequately cleaned away. This biofilm becomes invaded by opportunistic bacteria that can break down proteins and release smelly waste products called Volatile Sulphur Compounds. This whole process is accelerated during sleep due to the lack of new saliva produced. Sleep mimics an anaerobic situation.

Why does Morning Breath happen?
  • Your saliva flow slows down or can even stop. This means that there is less buffering of bacteria, less oxygen input, less tongue movement. These are all signals to anaerobic bacteria to begin breeding. During the course of one night's sleep you can manufacture two generations of new bacteria and their waste products, the Volatile Sulphur Compounds.
  • Mucus in the nasal areas thicken. When this happens the mucus can attach quite tenaciously to the nasal walls making removal difficult. This nasal mucus is high in protein and is an excellent food source for "Morning Breath" bacteria.
  • Your tongue falls to the back of your throat. This action allows easy colonisation of the dorsum (back) of the tongue surface. That is why when you wake in the morning, you not only have a bad or sour taste and breath, but you can also exhibit a coating on your tongue. This coating can be yellow or white depending on its severity and the amount of sulphur contained.
How do I prevent Morning Breath?
  • Before sleep, clean your mouth with our Bad Breath Recovery Products. This is essential to reduce the bacterial load on the mouth before sleep. Dr Speiser's Australian Breath Clinic has developed a specific instruction set to show you how best to clean your mouth to limit the bacterial counts and Volatile Sulphur Compounds.
  • Anyone with a dry mouth, nasal problem, or uses a CPAP machine, should also use the Hypertonic Nasal Wash before sleep. The spray helps to keep the nasal passages open and clean of mucus.
  • Chronic sufferers of bad breath or halitosis, should also use the KForce Probiotic Breath System after completing the tongue and mouth cleaning. KForce™ is a probiotic of a proven bacteria (Streptococcus salivarius K12) that promotes fresh breath. The use of KForce™ will help to lessen the numbers of anaerobic bacteria, as can be seen in this agar plate picture
KFORCE probiotic bacteria
The top 2 circles are KForce™ probiotic bacteria that produce BLIS (Bacteriocin Like Inhibitory Substance). They inhibit "morning breath" bacterial growth, as shown by the large amount of red space around the probiotic bacteria.

However, the lower 5 circles show normal mouth bacteria with no BLIS activity. They do not inhibit "morning breath" bacteria, as shown by very little red space around the bacteria. Therefore greater bacterial growth occurs during the night which causes the "Morning Breath".

All the products talked about can be purchased in our Bad Breath Recovery Program. This is recommended so that you tackle bad breath as well as morning breath.
